When it comes to our overall health these days allopathic doctors are often quick to cure what ails us with a pill or antibiotic or some other form of unnatural band-aide for our condition.
What has been long forgotten is what Hippocrates said: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” There was nothing said about loading our systems with medication. This is not to say that we never need to take medication, but not everything that ails us needs to be sorted out with a pill. In fact, with good nutrition, we can often avoid the need for medications. It is all about being proactive rather than reactive.
Eat the rainbow. Sounds like a rather odd statement, but the choice to eat colourful vegetables and fruits will ensure what you are consuming is loaded with natural antioxidants, nutrients, and vitamins.
Think of naturally occurring deep reds, greens, oranges, and yellows.
Whole grains are especially important as they carry the fibre we need as well as many of the B vitamins.
Proteins can come in many forms and can be found in animal and non-animal sources. We do not need as much protein as we have been conditioned to believe either. If you think about the size of a deck of playing cards as a guide, you should not consume more than that at any one meal. Lean proteins can be found in legumes, nuts, beans, dairy, poultry, and fish.
Dairy is important and is a good source of calcium and by having three 8-ounce servings in a day, you can get nearly all your daily recommended amounts of calcium. What you will want to watch out for is trying to source dairy products that are organic as much as possible, and which have no antibiotics.
Prevention is almost always better than managing the symptoms of a disease when it happens. Being sure to eat healthy and stay active are good choices in prevention. As the weather begins to turn and it gets colder outside, there are still ways to maintain nutrition and exercise. It is also good to change your diet and eat with the seasons. When you eat with the seasons you will consume fruits and vegetables that are at their peak in freshness and will often come from more local sources.
